Windows Update Help Guide
This guide explains how Windows updates will be delivered and installed on your computer. Please take a moment to review this information to understand the process and ensure your system remains secure and up-to-date.
Who Does This Apply To?
This process is for staff with Windows laptops or desktops only.
Overview of the Update Process
Maintenance Window:
An update will become available the second Tuesday of every month.
Updates will automatically download and install during the designated maintenance window: Every Friday, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Restart Notifications:
If an update requires a restart, you will see a notification in the bottom-right corner of your screen with a 90-minute countdown.
When 30 minutes remain, you will receive an additional prompt to restart. This restart cannot be snoozed or ignored.
At the end of the countdown, your computer will restart automatically to complete the update.
Manual Installation:
You can manually download and install the latest update at a time that works best for you. To do this:
Open Software Center by typing "Software Center" in the Windows search bar.
Navigate to the Updates (or Operating Systems) tab.
Select the latest Windows update and click Install.
Tips for a Smooth Update Experience
Choose Your Time: If possible, manually install updates before Friday to avoid forced restarts during the maintenance window.
Save Your Work: Make sure to save any open documents and close applications before the Friday maintenance window begins.
Restart Prompt: If you see the restart notification, you can restart your computer immediately to avoid waiting for the countdown.
